How to Replace Your Front Screen Door

Front screen doors fail in a few specific ways. Most of the time you're replacing the gas cylinder or the entire door. This page covers both.

Replacement Gas Cylinder

Match the length and tension rating of the original. Most standard screen door cylinders are interchangeable.

Measure the opening height and width before buying. Standard sizes are 32 and 36 inches wide.

Step-by-Step Fix

Replace the Gas Cylinder

Open the door halfway. Unscrew the bracket from the door first, then from the frame. Pull the cylinder off. Attach the new one frame bracket first, then door bracket. Adjust the tension screw so the door closes firmly without slamming.

Replace the Entire Door If Needed

Unscrew the hinges and lift the door off. Clean the frame opening. Hold the new door in the opening, shim it square, attach hinges starting with the top hinge, and install the latch hardware.
