How to Fix a Window Screen With Holes

A small hole in a window screen lets in bugs and looks bad. A patch kit handles holes up to a few inches in minutes. Larger tears mean replacing the full screen — which is also a simple job.

1
For Small Holes — Apply a Patch

Wipe the screen around the hole clean and dry. Cut a patch at least half an inch larger than the hole on all sides. Peel the backing and press the adhesive patch firmly over the hole from the outside. Press down all edges so there are no gaps.

2
For Large Tears — Replace the Full Screen

Pry up one corner of the rubber spline and pull it all the way around the frame. The old screen will lift right out. Roll out new screen over the frame and cut about an inch larger than the frame on all sides.

3
Install New Spline and Trim

Use the screen rolling tool to press the new spline into the groove, working one side at a time. Keep the screen taut but not stretched tight. Trim the excess screen along the outside edge of the spline with scissors or a utility knife.
